A Personal Note from Wendy
July 9, 2010

Hello Aspiring Planner,

Vacation 2010I hope you're well and enjoying the start to a fabulous summer!  It's been a busy one for me so far.  The family and I spent the better part of June on vacation.  We went on a cruise, visited Orlando and the Kennedy Space Center.  Here's a pic of my husband and brother on the island of Nassau with Winston, a local wood sculptor.  He told the best stories!

I've also been working on a new consulting program over the last few months and I'm finally ready to let you all in on it.  Yesterday I sent out a special announcement about it and the response has been tremendous!

This program has taken me quite a few months to create.  The content was there but I was missing a roadmap to put it all together.  It was really frustrating for me so I decided to start working with a mentor.  We all need help now and then, right?  Together we discovered that I was using the wrong business models and methods.

You may have felt the same way about your business.  You have some idea of what you should do in order to start your business but you aren't sure what should come first.  "Do I need a bookkeeping system before I sign my first bride?", or "Should I incorporate my business now or wait until I start making money?"

These and many other questions end up sapping your confidence level and steering you off track.  The result is you become stuck or paralyzed because you're trying to do what everyone else is doing and you don't how to make them work for YOUR business.

Today's article outlines what critical mistakes to avoid as you build your business.

Hope you had a productive and successful week.  I'll see you next Friday.  Until then...

“I was stuck and didn't really know who my target client was”

Before working with Wendy, I was stuck and didn’t know how to find my niche. I had a website and company name but I didn't really understand who my target market was or how to reach them. Wendy really pushed me to think about my business and how important it was to market it the correct way. Because of this I knew that the business needed a makeover so I could attract my ideal client.

Wendy really stretched me; and with her guidance, I did my homework and now I feel like my business is moving forward. I've created a whole new company identity and I finally feel that I’m making process. I was really surprised at the results I achieved so quickly.  I recommend that aspiring planners and anyone in the creative business that feels stuck or need direction in terms of business and marketing to hire Wendy.

This Week's Aspiring Idea

Don't Make These Mistakes

MistakesI was recently asked what I thought were the most common mistakes made by aspiring planners when they start their businesses.

Here's what I've seen in coaching aspiring planners:
  • Aspiring planners don't really take the time to find out if wedding planning is really something they're cut out for.
  • They don't take the time to learn the proper way to structure their business in a legal sense.
  • They don't create a marketable and compelling brand or identity for their business...nor do they identify who their ideal client is.
  • They don't spend enough time on the organizational and operational aspects of their business.
  • They don't take the time to decide what services they will provide...design, consulting, planning and or coordination; how those services will be priced and packaged (hate that word!); and finally whether those services will be profitable based on those prices.
  • They don't learn the importance of consistent marketing and the "art of the sale".
  • Finally, but certainly one of the most CRITICAL mistakes they make; they don't set up a system to record and monitor the financial transactions in their business.
Many times, these things are dealt with "on the fly"...AFTER they've chosen a pretty logo, published a nice website, printed business cards and placed an ad in a wedding magazine.  They do all this and wonder why they aren't getting the phone calls from all the brides that "need" their services.

Now...I didn't come up with these to throw stones...I made some of these same mistakes.  I merely wanted to share with you what I've seen in the 12 months since I've started mentoring aspiring planners.  Maybe this is one of the reasons so many planning businesses start and fail.  I've personally seen many of them come and go.

And it's not for lack of trying.  Not at all.  Many planners I've talked to are passionate and eager to make their businesses successful.  Truthfully?  The "bright, shiny objects"...the diamonds, pretty linens and gorgeous flowers blinded them.  They didn't take the time to look at the hard stuff and learn what they needed to learn in order to be successful.

Or maybe they found out that they just weren't cut out for wedding planning.  Too bad they invested so much money to find that out...when they could have just done the necessary work BEFORE the brides booked their services.

Are you committed to avoiding these mistakes and ready to start your business off right? Great! Now you may be wondering what's the quickest path to setting up your business with the right systems so that you are ready when that first bride calls. If that's the case, I recommend a one on one strategy session with me.  Let's talk for 15 minutes and figure out together where the gaps are in your business.

Visit the Services page at AspiretoPlan.com for options on how to setup your session today!  While you're there, get my f'ree report, "Seven Critical Mistakes Aspiring Planners Make BEFORE They Book Their First Bride".  You DO want to be ready BEFORE that first bride calls, don't you?
